The site is south-facing, 350-400 metres above sea level. Moderately loose-packed, slightly sandy, limestone-based soil. Gavarini Vigna Chiniera is a wine of breathtaking purity and finesse. Classic sense of structure, tannic cut and intensity. This is the prettier of the two Barolo that could be opened just a little earlier for those who just cannot wait.
The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is powerful and intense, with huge beams of tannin underpinning the fruit. Black cherry, plum, violet, mint and licorice develop in the glass. Today, the 2013 is quite reticent, with tons of power in reserve, but all the elements are in the right place. Not surprisingly, the 2013 is a tightly wound ball of energy. Readers need to be patient. Drink: 2023-2043
