The warm southwest-facing vineyard typically yields a powerful, intense wine in need of ageing. The 2019 demonstrates all the wild, penetrating characteristics of this site but it comes into harmony quickly, revealing its balance and precision. Wood-driven top notes of smoke and vanilla meld into pressed violets, rosemary and liquorice. Luscious red cherry and dark plum flesh are wrapped in long, layered chalky tannins. Since its founding in 1869, it has remained in the hands of the founders, the Walchs, who have decisively influenced the development of Alto Adige wine culture. The wine estate puts emphasis on the typicity of Alto Adige and its local wine varieties – classic wines in a modern and straightforward style – while rounding out the broad palette of wines with international varieties. The quality of the wines are a testament to professional expertise in the cellar and meticulous work in the steep vineyards at the feet of the Dolomites. The founder, Wilhelm Walch, ran a successful restaurant and a distillery in Vorarlberg. When he decided to enlarge his business but was not able to obtain a license, he moved with his five adult offspring to nearby Alto Adige. He acquired a former Jesuit monastery in Tramin and founded the wine estate. He showed good business sense, bought vineyards in the most promising areas of Tramin and Caldaro and turned the family business in short time into one of the largest wine estates in Alto Adige. The Walch family, now in the fifth generation, still manages the wine estate. In the nearly 150 years of its history, modern new buildings have enlarged and augmented the historic estate. Not a primary fruit wine by a long shot. There's a touch of earthiness about it while the wine is full-bodied and powerful, concentrated and emphatic to taste, with firm and slightly aggressive tannins and a generous serving of oak. The structure suggests it needs more time. Fruit is hard to locate but is definitely in there: drinking a glass with food reveals its profound core of gorgeous ripe fruit. A statuesque wine that needs age, or else a hearty protein accompaniment if you broach it now. The family has been associated for centuries with another activity typical of the Chianti region, the production of its famous “terrecotte” tiles. And it is in the name of this strong link with the territory and a great passion for quality that the estate has moved successfully towards an ever more attentive cultivation of the vineyards and a more profound knowledge of the potential of Sangiovese in the zone of Panzano. Fontodi is a certified organic estate which extends over 130 hectars of which about 70 are planted with vines. The type of agriculture practised is inspired by the principles of respect of nature and sustainability. Not only are no chemical products used but there is an effort to maximize the internal resources of the estate, thereby reducing the need for any external input. Respecting the environment means wines that are better, purer, and a truer expression of the grape and the territory. The process of vinification and ageing in wood takes place in the modern cellar, built on descending levels to take advantage of gravity, guaranteeing the most respect possible for the natural integrity of the grape, in order to exalt the character and elegance of the wines.

Fontodi
Default dried sage. Very layered and inviting. Intense, driving and powerful on the palate yet also elegant. Red fruits buried deep within. The wine is focused and tensioned, still unfolding itself and promises more if cellared a while. Full bodied, very long and persistent flavours together with taut, tensioned tannins. Excellent wine, just starting to enter its drinking window.

95 Points, Michaela Morris, Decanter Feb 2023 - "First produced in 1985, Vigna del Sorbo sits alongside Flaccianello at the apex of Fontodi’s range. It was elevated from Riserva to Gran Selezione with the introduction of the category in 2014. The vineyard extends over eight hectares with the oldest plantings now well over 50 years old. The 2020 is slow to reveal itself – even with coaxing, aromas aren’t completely forthcoming. Eventually, subtle hints of sundried tomato and grilled herbs evolve to darker tones of violet and liquorice. True to its western Panzano origins, the framework is firm and sturdy. Tight with a concentrated core but not overly dense, there's a richness to the tannins. Finishes with savoury black plum and toast. Since then, about 100 contracted grapegrowers deliver their precious grapes to the family to finally sum up the family-owned vineyards.

96 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous.com, Feb 2026 “The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has shut down a bit in bottle, showing a more delicate bouquet today. It is a wine that expresses the Montalcino territory with purity and embodies the finest aspects o f the area’s longstanding tradition of cultivating world class Sangiovese. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with an initial short period of cold maceration (below 20°C) on the skins for about 15-20 hours. This is followed by up to 20 days of maceration at a higher controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation that is naturally caused then lasts for about 10 days, before the wine is rested to separate the lees. The Alessandrias make compelling, classically-built wines from estate vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d’Alba. Best of all, the wines remain very reasonably priced by today’s standards. Readers who enjoy structured, age-worthy Barolos won’t want to be without these wines —Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com The Alessandria family since the mid-19th century has called this gentle landscape home. In 1870, when the family first established their farm, calling it Fratelli Alessandria , Verduno was the center of Barolo winemaking—it was here where families first crafted dry Nebbiolo wines in the style we know today, and also bottled wines individually instead of shipping in cask. Because of this, the village was internationally recognized as the face of Barolo and sought out by collectors across the European continent. Today Verduno is experiencing a renaissance, and it is the “brothers” Alessandria who are guiding the wines of Verduno back to the heights they once held. It is of course a family affair—the brothers Gian Battista and Alessandro, and Alessandro’s son, Vittore, are the stewards of this generations-old estate. What Verduno gives is exactly what we crave in our Barolo wines: complexity without heaviness, structure with finesse. The Alessandria family provides a “mirror to the landscape,” Vittore says, respecting the history of their forefathers yet “looking ahead” to ensure that what’s in each bottle reflects the true essence of Barolo from Verduno.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0602/5694/4264/files/FratelliAlessandriaBarolodelComunediVerduno.png?v=1768276229
le-macchiole-bolgheri-rosso-2022
Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2022

50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah – another Merlot-dominant wine. Points, Vinous.com: "The 2021 Flaccianello della Pieve is another exceptional wine from Fontodi this year. Ripe, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark fruit as the 2021 makes its presence felt from the first taste. Sumptuous, racy and dense, this is just magnificent. As has been the case for some time, Flaccianello is a blend of mostly three parcels throughout the estate but closer to town." By Antonia Galloni on June 2024

98 Points, Robert Parker Wine Avocate: "The Fontodi 2021 Flaccianello della Pieve opens to a medium-dark inky appearance and solid aromas of black fruit and pressed blackberry. The Flaccianello is a touch more accessible at this early stage compared to the Vigna del Sorbo, but both wines are undoubtedly built to withstand ample cellar aging. Flaccianello is the more powerful or the two, and the Vigna del Sorbo is more delicate in comparison. These dueling character traits are especially evident in this classic 2021 vintage. This wine also boasts a more generous mouthfeel supported by softly integrated tannins.

Fontodi
Default Points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "Now showing the Panzano UGA on the front label, the Fontodi 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Terrazze San Leonlino (made with certified organic fruit) is a delightful wine and a relatively new addition to a portfolio that excels in a classic vintage such as 2021. Taking full advantage of new regulations that give identity to appellation subzones (or UGAs), the wine exudes the depth, richness and sunshine that Panzano fruit is known for. The bouquet is stitched together with generous black fruit, pencil shaving and light spice, but the wine ultimately stands apart for its threefold balance of fruit versus acidity versus oak spice.

Fontodi
Default The family has been associated for centuries with another activity typical of the Chianti region, the production of its famous “terrecotte” tiles.

Only 12,000 bottles are made.

93 Points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate "Elegant and precise, the Cantina del Pino 2020 Barbaresco brings lots of freshness and a charming view of young Nebbiolo fruit. This vintage tends to be more accessible overall, but you are nonetheless awarded with the subtle nuances and complexity that characterize this variety. Today it is one of the better wineries in the Maremma. The cellar is located less than a kilometer from the historic settlement. The special winery is owned by Filippo Chia, also owner and winemaker of the renowned Montalcino house Castello Romitorio. The domain is located on the Tuscan coast, just south of Grosseto. Filippo owns about twenty hectares of vineyards, twelve of which are in Morellino di Scansano. The proximity to the Mediterranean Sea provides cooling in the quite warm region, and therefore beautiful freshness in the grapes, which can ripen perfectly here. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2020.

Although 15% other grapes are allowed, Filippo makes his Morellino (since 2018) from 100% sangiovese. The grapes are harvested by hand and thoroughly selected and destemmed upon entering the cellar. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Wood aging does not achieve this pure sangiovese expression.

The result is a powerful, rich but at the same time supple red wine, Tuscan sangiovese through and through. Ripe red cherry fruit, savory spiciness, juicy freshness and a medium body. A delicious wine with rustic Tuscan cuisine, such as pasta or polenta with wild boar ragout.
