Another beauty is the 2013 Crozes Hermitage Cap Nord, which comes from a granite terroir and is aged in older barrels. It reveals complex notes of saddle leather, garrigue and violets intermixed with a terrific core of black and blue fruits. With medium-bodied richness, a layered, elegant profile and outstanding length, it should keep nicely through 2023. Drink: 2016-2023 (Dec16)

From vines planted in the 1950’s on granite soils in the North of Crozes The grapes are destemmed for a modern style fermentation of pump overs and cap punching. Aged for 12 months in new oak before being bottled unfiltered and unfined. This is a very modern tasting Crozes-Hermitage with bright red fruits outlined by new oak.

So far ahead of the organics game was Laurent’s father Maurice, he gained the nickname of Maurice le Fou (Crazy Maurice) when he converted the family’s mixed fruit farm over 40 years ago. All that hard work has paid off for his son, and current generation winemaker Laurent Combier.

After a short hiatus away from the family farm studying oenology and working at some fancy wineries Laurent returned full of knowledge and gusto, and big decisions were made to pull their grapes from the local co-op and focus on Domaine Combier. Since those important years, Domaine Combier has grown quite a following for their organic, and more importantly, well made wines.
