What the Critics say
Glass-staining ruby. Displays pungent, spice-accented aromas of ripe dark berries, candied violet, musky herbs and minerals that pick up a smoky nuance with air. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering pliant black/blue fruit, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. Becomes deeper with air, with no loss of energy, and finishes mineral and very long, with smooth tannins and repeating floral and herb notes.
In the centre of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, in the municipality of Ampuis, stands the locality of “Bonnivières”, a handsome east-facing hillside of mica schist. The “Terres Sombres” cuvée was made chiefly with wines from this locality. The grapes are hand-picked; and then sorted, crushed and partially destemmed in the cellar. Fermented with native yeasts in open, temperature-controlled vats for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping-over. Malolactic-fermented in barriques.
