What the Critics say
The copper-colored 2008 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is somehow both intense and also remarkably fresh. Burnt sugar, caramel, dried herbs and spice all resonate in this vivid, deeply expressive wine. As always, Fontodi excels with a rich, unctuous style of Vin Santo. The 2008, though, has terrific freshness and more than enough acidity to play off the richer elements. The 110 grams per liter of residual sugar are not especially evident. This is a spectacular Vin Santo by any measure. Drink: 2018-2028. (Jan18)
Fontodi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico precisely in the valley which lies south of the town of Panzano and is called the “Conca d’Oro” (the golden shell) because of its amphitheatre shape. A genuine and characteristc “Terroir”, famous for centuries for its tradition of quality wine cultivation, thanks to a unique combination of high altitude, calcar clayschist soil, lots of light, and a fantastic micro-climate – warm and dry with a marked difference in day and night-time temperatures.
