The Blaufränkisch vines in the Kulm vineyard were planted by Heidi's great-aunts Emma, Irma and Milli in the spring of 1955. 14 months in large oak casks (Austrian). Very dark cherry colour. Intensely aromatic and lifted with lovely floral top notes over a foundation of fragrant and not overly sweet dark-cherry fruit. Smells a bit like a cherry and almond flan but more savoury. On the palate, creamy textured, very smooth and yet with intensity and persistence. Caressing and still full of life. Depth without excess weight. Drink: 2014-2018 (Jul14)

Heidi Schrock produces some of the best Austrian sweet wines as well as interesting dry whites and reds. She took over her family winery in 1983, in the historic village of Rust situated near the Hungarian border. The south-facing vineyards near Rust form an amphitheatre around Lake Neusiedl. In this part of Austria, the yearly hours of sunshine are much higher than the Austrian average. The extra sun combined with sandy soils mixed with clay and high calcium content provide a perfect terroir for impressive wines.

The grapes for Blaufränkisch Kulm were harvested by hand and fermented on the skins; after two weeks maceration, matured in large oak casks for 14 months.
