Light straw colour, with a reserved savoury bouquet, which invokes subtle cashew nut and almond aromas, the passionfruity notes only emerging after time in the glass. The palate turns sweeter and more fruity, with the gentlest flick of residual sugar then a cleansing dry finish. Good depth of sauvignon fruit flavour, with some extra savoury embellishments. Lovely drinking.

Makipai Wines is a partnership between two good friends who needed an ongoing excuse to get together and chat about music (mainly punk-think Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash) and football (mainly about the five minutes when Newcastle United were good). The two friends are Andrew Hedley (ex-winemaker at Framingham) and a Sydney wine merchant. The wines are made by Andrew with love and care and these first releases are aimed at giving brilliant quality at extremely reasonable prices.

From a single vineyard called Weta Estate. It is way up the Wairau Valley under Mt Patriarch. It's about 15 years old, ripens late in vintage. Soils are Greywacke river stones and silt, three terraces down to the river's edge. All stainless steel ferment with cultured yeasts. No fining but juice clarified with gelatin so not vegan friendly. The 2021 is vegan friendly however .... Filtered obviously ....
