What the Critics say
‘Black cherry, spice, leather, cedar and menthol infuse the 2016 Barbaresco Basarin with striking aromatic complexity. Powerful and resonant, with terrific depth, the 2016 has so much to offer. Today, a hint of reduction lingers, but otherwise, the Basarin is very pretty and expressive. The 2016 finishes with real cut and an array of floral notes that add perfume and brightness.’
A family affair to this very day, Moccagatta continues to focus on both the terroir of their homeland and the finesse that Barbaresco demands. The vineyards are all farmed organically and the wines, while being aged in a stunningly updated winery, speak of a place and of a people with a long history of tending this very land. If you haven’t been introduced to the wines of Moccagatta, now’s the time. And if you have, we welcome you to reacquaint yourself with these beautiful wines from Barbaresco.
Note: 650 doz made. This Barbaresco is birthed from the Basarin cru in Neive, Moccagatta’s only single vineyard located outside of the Barbaresco township. Basarin is marked by its high altitude (250-280m) and calcarerous-grey marl & sand soils. These estate owned vineyards, dating back to 1965, are located at a southern exposure, allowing for proper sunshine at this high elevation site. The grapes are macerated on the skins in temperature-controlled steel vats before maturing in French oak barriques for 18 months, then the wine ages in bottle for a minimum of 10 months prior to release.
