    Description

97pts The Wine Front "The word ‘quartz’ adorns a couple of my favourite wines from all over the globe, now I think of it. Quartz is the strength in the soils of the best chardonnay bits of Bindi’s garden too. And here, another magnificent release. Alas, not tasted with Michael Dhillon as has been a habit at times.

If you want to look up ‘complexity; wine’ or ‘premium wine’ or ‘fucking awesome’ in a dictionary then I suggest a picture of this bottle accompanies. It’s impressive from the first whiff of fragrance, all rich, fresh, savoury, fruit driven, saline and slate minerally, and just so darn intriguing. Beckons you in. The glass to mouth experience comes with that fog of perfume and an immediate hit on the palate of luxurious flavour but sparks of mineral (again) and saltiness (delicious) and nutty things (complexity) all wound through powerful yet graceful, palate-staining fruit. So much going on, so stellar, so fantastic to drink."

    Description

At the upper end of the Chardonnay planting, where the quartz incidence in the soil is the greatest the fruit has extra complexity, finesse and intensity. This wine comes exclusively from this soil. This area is approximately half one hectare in size. The characteristics are similar in the Quartz Chardonnay to the Kostas Rind Chardonnay but all aspects are amplified here yet remain in complete harmony.

The winemaking is the same for both wines however the Quartz Chardonnay sometimes spends a few months longer in barrel and there is a higher percentage of new wood used, being around 35%.

Production varies from 150-250 dozen per vintage.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Bindi Wines

Magic in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria

BINDI, 50 kilometres north-west of Melbourne in the Macedon Ranges, is not just a boutique vineyard. It’s actually a 170-hectare (ha) property of which 7ha are planted to vines—just pinot noir and chardonnay. Most of it is bushland, a section is reserved for important indigenous grasslands such as kangaroo grass, and 15ha are dedicated to a managed plantation of eucalypts (sugar gums) for high-grade furniture timber.

Bindi Wines fall under that category of “wines I would rather keep than sell.” The chardonnays are extraordinarily fine, precise, intense and beautiful, while the pinot noirs are a sensational group. The quality is very even, the style of the wines stunningly elegant, seamless and charming, but also profound. Charming pinot noir of depth is not that easy to find.
