    Description

Some 6,000 bottles were released, and as always, Cantina del Pino offers enormous quality at this price point. This whole portfolio from Cantina del Pino is terrific, with top-notch expressions of Nebbiolo that are fine and fragile.

Opening to dusty mineral notes of crushed limestone, the 2019 Barbaresco Ovello is a focused and angular wine that makes for a very pretty presentation. The aromas are direct and vertical, given momentum by shadings of iron ore and pencil shaving. I love the extreme focus of this wine.

    Description

This tiny winery holds a special place in the history of Barbaresco. It was first owned by Domizio Cavazza, who first recognised the potential of Barbaresco for the Nebbiolo grape around the turn of the last century. He’s known fondly as ‘the father of Barbaresco.’ The estate was acquired by the great-grandfather of Renato Vacca, who is the current incumbent. Renato takes a step back in the cellar: he lets the wines do their thing. The results are pure, intense, and expressive.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Cantina del Pino

The Vacca family has been living and working the vines at Cantina del Pino, one of the oldest estates in Barbaresco, since the 1920s when Giuseppe Vacca, bought the property from his friend, the legendary agronomist and director of the Royal Enological School in Alba, Domizio Cavazza.

The family's vineyards are concentrated around the Ovello hill. The site is known for its combination of cooler microclimate and unique soils blending limestone with sandy veins and a high calcium content, the perfect conditions for an elegant, age-worthy Barbaresco.
