What the Critics say
Another fine, elegant example of the appellation, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Saintes Vierges is mostly Grenache, with the balance Mourvèdre and a tiny splash of Counoise. Scents of roses, lavender and purple raspberries give this wine immediate charm, and while it's full-bodied, it's also silky and pure, with an almost airy feel on the palate and terrific length. The first single vineyard the estate settled in the appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The old Grenache vines, along with Mourvèdre and Counoise, have a penchant for the finesse and lightness of these sandy soils situated in the southwester part of the appellation. Hand picked grapes undergo very stringent sorting in the winery before a short and soft maceration. The wine is then put into bigs casks and terracotta jars before bottling.
