What the Critics say
‘Still in foudre, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Habemus Papam looks to have softened considerably since I tasted it last year. Floral-herbal notes accent ripe cherries, while the palate boasts a wonderfully rich, creamy texture. Full-bodied, with supple tannins, this tour de force is long, silky and elegant. Drink: 2019-2030’
This label is a tribute to Jean XXII, a native of Cahors, who was the first pope to choose Avignon as the Papal residence and build a new castle (château neuf) in the place that should become Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is a hand picked blend of Grenache (64%), Syrah (25%), Mourvedre (10%) & Counoise (1%) grown on sandy clay, safre soils, ancient alluvial and molassic sands. Before release the wine spends 18 months in large foudres and terracotta jars.
