What the Critics say
Roses, mint and raspberries give the full-bodied 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Habemus Papam a deceptively light, airy feel. Silky tannins reinforce that sensation, finishing with hints of black tea and a soft dusting of Asian five spice powder. It's a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah that should drink well for a decade or more. Drink: 2020-2035

This label is a tribute to Jean XXII, a native of Cahors, who was the first pope to choose Avignon as the Papal residence and build a new castle (château neuf) in the place that should become Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is a hand picked blend of Grenache (64%), Syrah (25%), Mourvedre (10%) & Counoise (1%) grown on sandy clay, safre soils, ancient alluvial and molassic sands. Before release the wine spends 18 months in large foudres and terracotta jars.
