“A superb release! So purple. Boysenberry, plenty of spice, new leather, aromatic with dried flowers and scrub herbs. Medium to full-bodied, quite the ‘mineral’ feel to it, deep and rumbling, but fresh too, with a bitter orange peel and meaty flavours mingling with vibrant purple fruit. Tannin is ripe, with fine chalky powdery grip, and a zesty savoury finish of excellent length. Black tea too, maybe. Very young, but already extremely good. Drink: 2022 - 2032+”

100% Mataro. The great undervalued variety of Mataro, a Spanish synonym widely used in the Barossa for the French variety Mourvedre, has long held a fascination for Tim Smith. In the great years, viz 2009/2010/2012/2013, TSW Mataro has the classic varietal aromas of Chinese-5-spice, liquorice and dark berry fruits. The palate is at once spicy, with lively defining tannins due to being picked at exactly the right time and being under the deft hand of Tim Smith once in the winery…vineyard age is up to 130 years and usually up to four vineyard selections make the final blend.

“A blend of usually two vineyards from the floor of the Barossa Valley, one of them around 140 years of age, the other about 70 years of age. I age my Mataro in larger format older French barrels – usually 500 litre puncheons to slow down the maturation and decrease the oak influence.” - Tim Smith
