What the Critics say
Saturated violet. Assertive blackberry, cherry, peony, smoky mineral and exotic spice scents show fine delineation and a hint of smoky minerality. Alluringly sweet, palate-staining black and blue fruit, spicecake and floral pastille flavors deepen with air and take on a candied licorice note on the back half. Rich, for sure, but energetic as well, finishing with firm, minerally cut on a strikingly persistent finish that features polished tannins and sexy floral and exotic spice flourishes.
On Vérenay’s commune, there is the plot called La Viallière. A beautiful southern exposed hillside, preserving the freshness and on which is planted some of Cuilleron's oldest vineyards. The grapes are hand-picked; and then sorted, crushed and partially destemmed in the cellar. Fermented with native yeasts in open, temperature-controlled vats for about 3 weeks, with regular cap-punching and pumping-over. Malolactic-fermented in barriques.
