What the Critics say
Primary dark berry and cherry pit aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense, candied flowers and exotic spices, along with emerging cracked pepper and cola nuances. Deeply concentrated blueberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors slowly turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Shows outstanding energy and mineral lift on an extremely long, finely etched finish that features chewy tannins and repeating blue fruit and floral character.
The Barbarine cuvée comes from younger vines on granite-based soils in the Côte Blonde. Made with 8% Viognier from small sites centred on Tupins and Combard in the Côte Blonde.
Yves Gangloff who, despite the slightly rock-and- roll look, maybe a little too well-established to be described as an ‘enfant terrible’, continues to astonish even his fellow winemakers with the concentration and quality of his wines. His popularity is legendary in France, which means that not very much of the already diminutive production is available for the export market. Yves settled in the Rhône region, from Alsace, only because he fell in love with Mathilde, a local woman whobecame his wife. The couple sold their grapes to E. Guigal before establishing their own vineyard in 1987. Yves Gangloff draws his wine-making experience from the time he spent at the Rhône Domaine Delas. Gangloff labels usually of voluptuous nudes, are painted by Yves' brother.
