“Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It has a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.” - Ben Knight

    Description

These two wines represent a singular focus toward making the absolute best from a site, or region that has until recently, been famous for almost anything but premium wine production. Irrewarra, in my opinion, shows that when the gaze of the Farr’s turns toward a goal, anything is possible. These wines that began as young, fresh and showing potential, have evolved into some of the best Pinot and Chardonnay in the country.

    What The Critics Say
“Good depth of purple tinged colour, the bouquet super expressive and loaded with dried-herb, dried seaweed, iron/ferrous savouriness, dried cherry as well, but the bouquet is very savoury and the opposite of a fruit bomb. On the palate it's very intense and powerful, with a gorgeous core of sweet cherry fruit, liberal fine grained tannins providing the structure and the length also remarkable. Seems whole-bunchy but there is zero whole bunch in the ferment. Very much a Farr style of pinot and from memory the best Irrewarra I've seen to date.” 96 POINTS ★★★★★ Huon Hooke The Real Review, Aug 2025

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    IRREWARRA

In 2001 the Calverts planted a four-hectare vineyard of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vintage they had spent in Burgundy in 1992 inspired them to plant Burgundian varietals well-suited to the Irrewarra climate. The site chosen was next to their homestead on the Otway foothills at Irrewarra, overlooking the spreading plains and Mount Gellibrand. The site had a metre of brown sandy loam over clay and was well-drained and north-facing.

Irrewarra region is historically wet, so the decision was made to have a dryland vineyard, to not irrigate, following the Burgundian tradition. It was believed this would result in a more concentrated wine, exhibiting more of the local terroir. Unfortunately, the planting was followed by a 10-year drought and a viable crop took years to achieve. But the climatic conditions forced the vines to send their roots deeper into the sub-soil and the underlying clay base. Now, even in hot, dry summers, more common with each passing year, the vines remain green and healthy until autumn.

In 2015 one of Australia’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers, By Farr, owned by Gary and Robyn Farr and their son Nick and wife Cassie, took over the management of the vineyard. After a few years the grapes were of such quality, that it was decided to vinify the wine separately to the By Farr wines and release it under the Irrewarra label. The first release in 2017 was of the 2016 Chardonnay (96/100 James Halliday) and the 2015 Pinot Noir (94/100 Ralph Kyte-Powell). The wines continue to receive impressive reviews, each vintage a unique expression of the growing season.
