17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com "From the dry-farmed Holdaway vineyard in Dillons Point, close to the sea. Spontaneously fermented in French oak puncheons (15% new) and matured on the lees for 15 months.
Flinty notes of light reduction. The oak is subtle but present. Mealy citrus, salty and vibrant with blackcurrants rather than green fruits. Sophisticated, marked by the winemaking but not excessively so. Creamy texture, real depth and richness yet balanced by great freshness to a long finish. Burst of grapefruit and blackcurrant on the finish." -

95 Points GOLD Halliday Wine Companion "Fruit comes from the Holdway vineyard, which is perched in Dillons Point in the lower Wairau on the eastern edge. The Abstract block is completely dry farmed and whole-bunch pressed, with the free-run portion going straight to French oak puncheons (15% new); maturation on lees took place over 15 months. You'll be met with the fervour of ripe fruit aromas: preserved lemons, mango skin, quince and lime extract. It has a sandalwood spice and some baking oat biscuits. Its citrus brightness takes over on the palate, leading to mango once again. Like all of the white wine from Blank Canvas, texture, energy and lift are at the core of the wine. You are left feeling buoyant and invigorated."

If classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is all fruit and zing, Abstract exists in another dimension altogether. It’s our savoury blanc, where texture and aromatic complexity bedazzle, and where vineyard and winemaking contribute equally. There’s an intense and seductive perfume of blackcurrant and white florals, while winemaking lends savouriness and flinty minerality. The must is wild fermented in French oak puncheons and matured on lees for 15 months, delivering a sumptuous richness and complexity to the palate. With elegance and beautiful balance, it is for enjoyment now but will age with grace and dignity.
