93 Points Vinous.com "The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them."

92 Points James Suckling "Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024."

92 Points Decanter Magazine "A dark heady nose comprising blackcurrants, black cherries and some sweet cinnamon spices. This is a headier style, clearly powerful with well-handled, ripe fruit and a core of liquorice that gives it a more serious tone. It has good acidity and freshness with fine tannins that support the fruit and give weight and definition to the palate. Good intensity here."

    Description

Château Chasse-Spleen is a winery in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation to the west of Margaux. It has long been viewed as the leading estate in that appellation – alongside Château Poujeaux – and is widely regarded, if not of being at cru classé standard, then certainly as holding a place among the top wines just beneath the classification. It was selected as one of six Crus Exceptionnels in the Cru Bourgeois classification in 1932 and maintained that status until the annulment of the classification in 2007. The wines are prized for their well-balanced fruitiness across a range of vintages. A second wine, L’Heritage de Chasse-Spleen, was known as L’Ermitage before 2000. L’Oratoire de Chasse-Spleen is the third wine. A white wine is also made, featuring around two-thirds Semillon to one-third Sauvignon Blanc.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Chateau Chasse-Spleen

The modern era for Chateau Chasse Spleen starts in 1976 when the estate was bought by the Merlaut family. At the time of the purchase, Chasse Spleen owned about 40 hectares of vines. Under the direction of Jacques Merlaut and his daughter, Bernadotte Villars they expanded their vineyard holdings so that today, Chasse Spleen has 80 hectares of vines. They replanted large sections of the vineyard to increase the vine density. They also updated and modernized their wine making facilities.
