“seems to have the secret of eternal youth, poised on the midpoint of citrus (grapefruit) and stone fruit (white peach). High quality French oak has been absorbed into the fabric of the wine”

Halliday Wine Companion 2024, Dave Brooks; 94 Points
“pure aromas of juicy white peach and citrus fruits. Hints of soft spice and nougat, lights wafts of struck match, marzipan and white flowers too. Tightly coiled with scintillating acidity and a wash of citrus fruits and oatmeal on the long persistent finish.”

“Cool sleek perfumed green apple aromas, with delicious palate of lemon tart, banana and yoghurt and a touch of toast”

    ABOUT DAWSON JAMES

“Wine that is made for love, not profit” - James Halliday. Dawson James was born of a friendship and winemaking partnership between Peter Dawson and Tim James. With a collective experience of more than 80 vintages, the opportunity of making world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay drew them to Tasmania. The cool and dry climate, hungry soils and 30 + year-old vines grow grapes with great depth of flavour and intensity of character. Our winemaking philosophy is based on picking fruit with a natural balance of flavour and acidity. A very simple approach to winemaking allows fruit quality to shine through.

    Description

The 2019 Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine, sourced from I10V5 clone Chardonnay vines growing on the Far Horse block of the Meadowbank vineyard in the Derwent Valley in Southern Tasmania. Vines in this block were planted in 2000.

The growing season leading into harvest was warmer and drier than average. Unsettled weather during flowering reduced fruit set and crop load. Weather conditions throughout ripening remained warm and dry resulting in well balanced flavoursome grapes.

The wine is bright with a lifted aroma of lemon peel and curd, nougat and minerally notes. The palate has a fresh citrus tang and creamy texture which is balanced by soft lingering acidity.

In keeping with previous vintages it is destined for long life.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Dawson James

Quality and innovation have always been the driving forces behind winemakers Peter Dawson and Tim James. The grapes are grown on the Meadowbank vineyard, which is located approximately 60 kms north west of Hobart. Its rugged topography is bounded by the fast flowing, pristine waters of the Derwent river. Plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were first made in 1987. Vineyard patches selected for Dawson & James wines were planted in 1989 and vine age plays an important part in flavour development and the balance of the fruit. We remain utterly convinced that Australia’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will be made in Tasmania and to be a part of that realisation is a challenge too great to resist.
