From a .24 ha holding in Les Treux; vinified with 40% whole clusters.

‘Half new wood and 40% whole bunch. Bright ruby purple. Little bouquet as yet, and the samples are cold. At the moment the density of the wine shows more than the subtlety, though I think that the detail is certainly there. More in red fruit than black. This may just be at too early a stage and there could be further upside to the Echezeaux. Drink from 2032-2038.’

92-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy, Nov 2023

‘A moderately toasty and fresh nose reflects more deeply pitched liqueur-like aromas of plum, dark cherry, spice and a wisp of mocha. There is both better volume and mid-palate density to the vibrant medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mouthfeel that carries over to the superbly long, moderately austere and impeccably well-balanced finaleGood stuff that is at once refined and powerful.’

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

The domaine’s beginnings date back to the late 19th century when François Xavier Julien first purchased some vineyard land in Comblanchien and Nuits-Saint-Georges. After the second World War, François’ son Armand set about expanding their holdings by purchasing more vineyards. His son Gérard continued the expansion in the 70s and 80s bringing the estate to roughly 10 hectares, where it is today with his acquisition of parcels of Nuits Villages, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Echézeaux Grand Cru.

Gerard’s son, Étienne (the fourth generation family-member to run the estate) has recently taken over at the domaine, but in a very short time it’s clear he is a real talent who is continuing to improve. In the coming years he no doubt will be one of the fresh faces in Burgundy that everyone will be talking about.
