    Description

100% Liatiko, the most widely planted red variety in Crete. This is a benchmark example. Light brick red colour, nice ripe savoury spice aromas. The palate is full of lovely dark cherry, plum and mace-like spice. Lovely crisp acidity and soft tannins from the mix of large oak puncheons and small barriques. Can be served lightly chilled. Try it with moussaka or grilled lamb.

    ABOUT DOULOUFAKIS WINERY

Located in the centre of Crete, the Douloufakis winery is now looked after by third generation Nikos Douloufakis who has put this estate on the world map. All the estates vineyards are situated on hill slopes at an altitude of 350 meters. They are mostly cultivated by hand and cover 20 hectares, all situated within the vine-growing region of Dafnes. Nikos is almost entirely responsible for the premium representation of Vidiano. The Aspros Lagos (white rabbit) is a medium-bodied, oak and acacia oak barrel fermented expression of this variety, that embodies texture and class. The dry red version of Liatiko is delicious and silky and clear proof that this variety is more than worthy of attention. Nikos’ understanding of contemporary wine styles and the current industry trends are clearly displayed in these wines and the focus on indigenous varieties shows this line up is Crete’s finest.

    What The Critics Say
The 2020 Liatiko Dafnios was aged for 12 months in used French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. Light in color and showing ample mid-palate finesse, this doesn't seem like a big wine, but it is ripe this year. It finishes with some baked plums and black cherries. There's a firm finish, with the moderate tannins providing support for the fruit but not getting in the way too much. This seems like a refined wine that still has big fruit and flavor. It is approachable now, but it should hold reasonably well, at least throughout the decade, probably more. No matter what, for the price, it's a good value.
