Deep red with a residue of purple in the meniscus, the bouquet subdued at first, showing some oak and a slight vegetal overlay, quickly opening out with complex spice, dried herb, dried floral and dried fruit aromas, the palate intense and bold, ripe and rounded with abundant silty tannins and concentrated flavour that evokes raspberry, chinotto, sarsaparilla, and balsamic herbs. The tannins are voluminous and coat the mouth, while the concentrated flavour powers on into an extended and beautifully balanced aftertaste. A sensational pinot of awesome power and grand cru stature.

“Sleek, polished and precise. The ‘23 RP is a beautiful garnet colour in the glass. The nose is small red fruits; cranberry, raspberry, red cherry, wedded to loads of spice. Savoury notes of cornichon, a pretty note of red petals all tie in this wonderfully complex wine. Notes of Cola which sounds weird, but I guess it’s more like chinotto. Dried citrus peel, brown sugar and dark spices. It’s lifted, pretty and direct. It has a wonderful core of softness, scaffolded with a peppery spice, a warm note of beautifully subtle yet, perfumed oak, and terrific acidity.” - Ben Knight for Nick Farr

The Real Review Winery of the Year 2022, Wine by Farr, is the pre-eminent winery in the Geelong region, its vineyards and winery located at Bannockburn in the Moorabool Valley just outside Geelong city. Nick Farr was Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s Winemaker of the Year in 2020, but he is always quick to emphasise that By Farr is a family affair and the wines are a team effort. Indeed, Gary Farr won the same award back in 2001. It’s the only two-generation winning combination. But the Farrs shrink from the idea that the winemaker is some kind of hero: it’s the grape and the land that are important. The Farrs only make wine from their own grapes and are true vignerons in the French sense – they grow the grapes, make the wine, mature and bottle it. Everything is done on-site.
