    96+ Points, Halliday Wine Companion:

"A calm and temperate vintage for Orange, this was picked over four non-consecutive days. From vines planted in '85 on red ferrosol soils. Indigenous yeast ferment, 50% mlf, matured for 11 months in 20% new oak and an additional seven months on lees in stainless steel tanks. The wine opens with crumbly bedrock, marigold and banksia. Its mineral core sweeps through with riverstone and licks of lemon salt. Citron is a constant thread throughout, with undulating waves of acidity and phenolic pomelo pith to finish. Power and drive now, but a bit more time in the bottle, and this will continue to unfurl. Another joyous wine from Canobolas. Drink 2025-2032."

    Description

This is brooding and introverted though eventually it is coaxed out into being. The powerfully floral nose gives way to reveal an abundance of citrus elements overlaid with oyster shell, iodine and quinine tonic. This is followed closely by a second wave of apple, pear and white peach aromas.

There is outstanding volume to the dense, serious and tautly muscular palate that brims with both minerality and sappy lime skin extract before culminating in a linear, chiselled and even more persistent finish.

Vine Age: 40 years old (planted 1985)
Soil: Red Ferrosol (the deepest red soil on the vineyard)
Winemaking: Fruit was hand picked, hand sorted then chilled overnight. Whole bunch pressed into a mixture of old and new oak. Fermented using indigenous yeasts and a natural malolactic (50%). Some occasional bâtonnage to individual barrels. Unfined
Aging: Oak 11 months (20% new) + Stainless Steel (7 months extra on lees)

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Canobolas Wines

Established in ’86 by the Smith family after an extensive search for the perfect site which was subsequently planted to chardonnay, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. The vines are dry-grown, gaining strength from the free-draining clay loam derived from basalt soils. ’22 saw the Mattick family gain ownership of Canobolas Wines and they have instilled a holistic approach both in the vineyard and winery, with minimal intervention at the core, allowing the wines to express nuance of site and fruit purity. The resulting wines are those of power and grace, though the chardonnay is the firm standout.
