97 Points, Ian D’Agata "Vivid red. The enticing nose offers wonderful floral lift to the expressive, pure aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, mint, graphite and spices. Sweet, concentrated and very refined, with an impeccable sugar/acid balance to the ripe flavours of dark and red berries and woodsy underbrush. Firmly structured and nicely concentrated, this juicy, penetrating classic Brunello is quite impressive for a “regular” wine and strikes me as being one of the top five classic Brunellos of the vintage. Drinking window: 2029-2036." - Dec 2025

96+ Points, The Wine Advocate "Castello Romitorio’s 2021 Brunello di Montalcino channels much of the estate’s fruit over seven plots, as no Riserva was produced, resulting in a wine of notable depth and cohesion. Whispered and delicate at first, the bouquet unfolds with white pepper, blue flowers and grilled herb before moving toward darker tones of sweet blackberry. The palate is open-knit yet powerful, showing juicy ripeness, layered complexity and a structured mid-palate that remains streamlined in classic Sangiovese fashion. Fermented in cement with maceration times tailored to the thickness of the skins from each plot, typically ranging from 18 to 24 days and extending up to 30 days when needed, the wine was aged for 24 months in oak, with 90% in large barrels and 10% in second- and third-passage tonneaux. Produced in 42,000 bottles, this Brunello will benefit from additional cellaring.." - Monica Larner, eRobertParker.com, Jan 2026

95 Points, Vinous.com "Cedar spice box mixes with incense, cloves and dried black cherries as the expressive 2021 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. Elegant with a wildly appealing energy, the 2021 displays masses of ripe wild berry fruits beneath an air of violet inner florals. It finishes with incredible length and concentration, perfectly framed by a coating of sweet tannin. This young, radiant Brunello is sure to have many fans. Drink 2028-2046" - Eric Guido, Vinous.com Nov 2025

    Description

The Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino is the estate's flagship wine and reflects more than 30 years of working in harmony with nature within the terroir of Montalcino. It is a wine that expresses the Montalcino territory with purity and embodies the finest aspects o f the area’s longstanding tradition of cultivating world class Sangiovese. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with an initial short period of cold maceration (below 20°C) on the skins for about 15-20 hours. This is followed by up to 20 days of maceration at a higher controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation that is naturally caused then lasts for about 10 days, before the wine is rested to separate the lees. The wine matures in oak for approximately 24 months, and after bottling the wine is aged in Castello Romitorio’s temperature-controlled cellars for approximately an additional 12 months before release.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Castello Romitorio

The Castello Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino is the estate's flagship wine and reflects more than 30 years of working in harmony with nature within the terroir of Montalcino. It is a wine that expresses the Montalcino territory with purity and embodies the finest aspects o f the area’s longstanding tradition of cultivating world class Sangiovese. Founded in 1984, Castello Romitorio has been committed to the study, exploration and promotion of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. This has been possible thanks to the work of the Italian artist Sandro Chia, and his bond with Franco Martini, the first cellar master of Castello Romitorio, whose family has been producing Brunello di Montalcino for generations. Sandro Chia planted Romitorio’s first vineyards from 1984 to 1993 using ancient sangiovese varietals local to Montalcino. Today these old vines compose about 50% of Romitorio’s vineyards and serve as an immense heritage of Biodiversity. This bond now continues between Sandro’s son, Filippo Chia, and Franco’s son, Stefano Martini. The team has been working together for decades and has a profound knowledge of the territory and the traditions of winemaking in Montalcino. The work carried out between the vineyard rows is meticulous and great care is taken to understand each vineyard in order to ensure that it develops in harmony. Each plot is kept separate in the cellar and carefully aged with the goal of preserving each plot's unique characteristics. Castello Romitorio produces wines that are undeniably terroir driven and transmit a unique matrix which makes each wine an undeniable expression of their land. Their Sangiovese from Montalcino embodied in their Brunello Riservas, Brunellos and Rosso di Montalcino are wines with a combination of subtle nuances that represent the ancient, and wild mountain Terroir. “CASTELLO ROMITORIO'S WINES ARE SOME OF MONTALCINO'S SLEEKEST AND MOST PERFUMED...” - IAN D'AGATA
