The 2023 Big Bird Syrah was grown on a mature vineyard near Echunga in the Adelaide Hills. It is the only wine that we have made that has not been grown in Tasmania. In truth we were seduced by the refined spicy nature of the fruit on this low yielding vineyard. The 2023 growing season in the Adelaide Hills was unusually very cool requiring every bit of vine energy to ripen the grapes which hand picked on the 20th April.
Description
Forty percent of whole bunches were retained for inclusion in fermentation in open fermenters prior to basket pressing and maturation of the wine in well-seasoned French oak barriques.
The wine has vivid colour and lifted aromas of black cherries and savoury notes. The palate has a creamy texture combining ripe red fruit flavours with gentle tannins and soft, lingering natural acidity.

Quality and innovation have always been the driving forces behind winemakers Peter Dawson and Tim James. The grapes are grown on the Meadowbank vineyard, which is located approximately 60 kms north west of Hobart. Its rugged topography is bounded by the fast flowing, pristine waters of the Derwent river. Plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were first made in 1987. Vineyard patches selected for Dawson & James wines were planted in 1989 and vine age plays an important part in flavour development and the balance of the fruit. We remain utterly convinced that Australia’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will be made in Tasmania and to be a part of that realisation is a challenge too great to resist.
