Description
This is an elegant wine of red and black fruit characters, with lively spice and savory notes, combining weight and length with long soft tannins. Delicious on release this single vineyard shiraz will continue to develop in bottle for up to a decade or more.2019 was a dry warm summer, with no rain between Christmas and picking, and excellent for shiraz.
Vineyard: predominantly from the Schoolhouse Block at Glenguin. A raised ancient river bench of deep gravel over clay soils, sustainable farming with permanent grasses throughout. No glyphosate herbicide or pesticides used. Hand pruned and handpicked.
Vines: A combination of original Busby and Penfolds clones with an average age over 26 years. Yields averaging 1.5 tons per acre.
Vinification: A week cold soaking on skins followed by a temperature controlled ferment utilizing 20% whole bunches. Matured in small neutral French oak for 14 months prior to bottling.
Made from the shiraz grown on the 3.5 acre Schoolhouse block adjacent to the old schoolhouse at Glenguin, this site of river gravel over clay is unique in the Hunter. Schoolhouse over many years has demonstrated the heights shiraz can achieve in the Hunter with its savoury earthy aromas and fine tannins.
