“The Papagiannakos 2025 Savatiano Old Vines is a charming and aromatic expression of Attica's historic grape. Notes of apple, quince, white-fleshed fruit and delicate white flowers are joined by subtle tropical nuances and a touch of cotton candy sweetness on the nose. The wine emphasizes freshness, clarity and varietal character.” 92 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

    Description

This is Vassilis Papagiannakos’ calling card, affectionately known as the “Little Rooster” thanks to the black cockerel on the label. The fruit comes from seven blocks of 70-year-old, low-yielding, unirrigated Savatiano vines in Markopoulo, the PGI on the Mesogia plain of eastern Attica, just southeast of Athens. The vines grow in limestone soils on gentle, north-facing slopes at around 100 metres above sea level.

The grapes are hand-harvested in mid-September, then fermented for around 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. It’s a lovely snapshot of why old-vine Savatiano deserves more attention: delicately aromatic, textural and dry, with plenty going on beneath the surface.

The Old Vines bottling — instantly recognisable by the little rooster on the label — is perhaps the clearest introduction. It has the authority good Savatiano can possess when yields are low, and the fruit is handled carefully: orchard fruit and herbs rather than perfume, limestone-derived energy and a gently stony texture that wraps around the tongue like a fine Mediterranean Chardonnay.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Papagiannakos

Founded in 1919, Domaine Papagiannakos is located in the Attica region of Central Greece, just 18 miles from Athens. Today, the winery is run by the 3rd generation, Vassilis Papagiannakos, who has issued a new era of modern winemaking while still maintaining the family’s dedication to developing and preserving the region’s most famous indigenous grape, Savatiano.

“Papagiannakos produces a line-up of majestic Savatiano. The Papagiannakos family has been making wine since the early twentieth century, with the current owner, Vassilis Papagiannakos, involved for the last twenty years. It is Vassilis that brought this estate to the forefront of modern Greek wine.” - Konstantinos Lazarakis MW, The Wines of Greece
