93 Points, Campbell Mattinson "Beautiful wine. Perfectly balanced. Cherry-plum flavours — emphasis on the plum — with sweet spice, cedarwood, polpourri and carth noles all contributing positively. Tannin is fine and well-placed, aromalies are lively, and the finish is langy, refreshing and well-suslained. This wine is joyous from all angles."
    Description

Vineyard: Select Portion of Single Vineyard, Kenton Valley, Adelaide Hills

Oak Maturation: Older French Oak Hogsheads for 15 months

    Winemaker: Josh Waechter

When: Drink now or cellar up to 10 years

Food: Lamb Backstrap with Rosemary and/or Charred Eggplant

Winemaker Notes: The VS Syrah fruit comes from a small section of the vineyard that has been selectively cane pruned to regulate yield and to increase exposure to the sun. This style of pruning creates an even canopy and yield which gives fuller flavour and tannin ripeness to the fruit. The vintage in 2024 had an excellent growing season which enabled freshness and vibrance at lower baumes, thus preserving the acidity and the clean fruit profile in the finished wine. The fruit was destemmed but not crushed and was fermented in a small open fermenter where it spent 12 days on skins. It was then hand dug out of the fermenter and gently pressed. Following this, it went into French Oak hogsheads before being racked and readied for bottle.

Tasting Notes: The Syrah exhibits dark blue and black fruits layered with nutmeg, bacon and a hint of black pepper fill the senses. Elegant, soft tannins wrap around a medium weighted palate of rhubarb, boysenberry, and cranberry layered with cocoa and finishing with a velvety mouthfeel full of personality. In its early life, the Syrah will benefit from being decanted and allowed to settle for 15-30 minutes before pouring.

5 STARS WINERY AWARD - JAMES HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION

"Every year, tasting the new releases of Mike Press Wines fills me with a sense of wonder: how is it possible that such BEAUTIFULLY MADE WINES should have such IMPOSSIBLY LOW PRICES? - James Halliday

After working in the South Australian wine industry for over 40 years – from Penfolds under Max Schubert, to Seppelt, and finally to Mildara Blass as chief winemaker – Mike purchased the property in Kenton Valley, near Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills, in 1998. The family company has been proud to have set the benchmark for producing quality wine at an outstanding prices. What started out as an idyllic retirement plan for Mike and Judy Press, became a thriving business offering amazingly affordable wines to Australia and then to the world. In 2017, Bob and Yuko Harris, a couple who were just as passionate about wine and South Australia, purchased Mike Press Wines and continue the great legacy.
