98 Points GOLD Halliday Wine Companion

"5% whole bunches; co-fermented with 5% viognier. Matured in 500L French oak (25% new). Deep purple. Aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant pastilles, violets and white pepper can all be found in the concentrated, multi-faceted bouquet. It's voluptuous without being heavy on the palate. The flavours go on and on, as do the fine-grained and exceptionally persistent tannins. It's balanced enough to drink now but it will also reward 10 years, or more, in your cellar. Super wine. Drink 2026-2036"

    Description

This wine is from the original plantings in 2001 and a portion from the newer planting of the same clone in 2011. The clone is an old Barossa clone BVRC38.

There is a highly fragrant and detailed Grenache this year. It is crammed with trademark raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate and wild strawberry fruits. There is a spicy edge and the aromas lifted and fragrant with a floral edge as it opens.

Fine silky and concentrated and poised it is a really delicious wine. The tannin structure and mouthfeel is juicy and intense and layered with raspberry and strawberry fruits. The length is there along with trademark chalky Grenache finish. It is delicious now as a good young Grenache should be, but it will continue to evolve and improve over the coming years.

    ABOUT THIS BRAND

    Serrat

Serrat: A Catalonian word meaning high density planting. Serrat has 6,600 vines per hectare, producing less than one bottle of wine per vine.

Serrat is a family-run vineyard in Yarra Valley, founded by renowned winemaker Tom Carson and his wife Nadège. Known for their ultra-high-density plantings and precision winemaking, Serrat produces limited, estate-grown wines that reflect the true character of their site. With a diverse mix of varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Grenache, Nebbiolo. The wines are vibrant, textural, and highly sought after. Considered a cult winery in Australia, Serrat has a strong following and a waiting list for its coveted membership.

Vigneron Tom Carson – who was the 2023 Halliday Viticulturist of the Year – has long been revered within the industry, with James Halliday noting, “As well as being a consummate winemaker, Tom has one of the best palates in Australia and a deep understanding of the fine wines of the world.”
